Oops, Something Broke During Your Stay. What Now?

Holidays are for unwinding, not worrying – but even on the most relaxing getaway, life can get a little clumsy.

A mirror tips in a sudden breeze, a cup slips from your hands or a splash of merlot finds fabric it shouldn’t. No matter how careful you are, accidents happen.

So, if something is damaged during your stay, don’t panic. Here’s how to handle it thoughtfully, protect yourself and keep your trip running smoothly.

A Smart Habit on Arrival

When you first settle into your holiday home, it’s helpful to take a few photos of rooms and furnishings. These snapshots create a record of how everything looked when you arrived – and they also make a sweet addition to your travel album.

If you notice anything already worn, cracked or not quite right, send a quick message to your host. It sets the tone for open communication.

Before you leave, a few “goodbye” photos could give you peace of mind, especially if you stayed for an extended period.

If Something Breaks

The best thing you can do is let your host know as soon as possible.

They understand that even the most thoughtful guests can have mishaps. Sometimes an item is inexpensive or already due for replacement and knowing early assists your host prepare before the next guest arrives.

Here’s what helps:

• Take clear photos of the damage and include something nearby for scale – for example, place a coin, a book or your hand next to the area so your host can gauge its size.
• Share a simple explanation of what happened.
• Keep the receipt if you decide to purchase a replacement – but only if it’s the same item or a like-for-like alternative. For instance, replacing a simple glass with a similar set is fine, but choosing a different colour or style, isn’t recommended.

Clear communication keeps everything friendly and straightforward.

Why You Should Speak Up Quickly

Waiting until check-out to mention damage can make the situation more complicated – and occasionally more expensive.

Your host may already know that a cupboard hinge is loose, or a lamp is fragile. Early communication can save everyone stress and sometimes even prevent further damage.

Short-term stays work best when both sides trust each other and honesty removes guesswork.

If There’s a Misunderstanding

In rare situations, a guest may be held responsible for something they didn’t cause or that falls under normal wear and tear. This is when those first-day photos become incredibly useful.

Most booking platforms offer a structured resolution process with clear timeframes to respond and supply evidence. If you believe a charge is incorrect, present your details calmly and follow the steps provided.

Documentation speaks clearly.

A Note on Insurance

While travel insurance typically focuses on lost luggage or cancellations, many providers now offer optional coverage for accidental damage in holiday homes. If you travel frequently or enjoy higher-end stays, it can be worth considering.

Some policies also protect your personal belongings if damaged by an event inside the home – though every policy is different, so it’s worth reading the fine print.

Real Life Happens

Holiday homes are often curated with care – layered with memory, style and personal choices. In return, hosts simply appreciate being kept in the loop when the unexpected occurs.

Nearly every situation can be resolved through a polite message, a couple of photos, and transparency.

Don’t let an accidental mishap overshadow the reason you’re here: relaxed afternoons, sand-softened sunsets, shared meals and memories that travel home with you.

Let the moment pass. The magic of your stay should be the part you remember.
